Introduction to College Studio: Projects, Process & Art History

This class is about investigating the fundamentals of design.
It is not structured to get a full grasp of all disciplines.
The focus of the class is to understand the importance of the process involved
in following through with an idea.

This is a hands-on, project oriented course to help prepare the student
for the college studio environment.


week 1: introduction: what is design?
Slideshow, videos and discussion about the class and types of design
week 2: process of design
Project: design a word that visually describes what it means.

week 3: design yourself
Project: design a logo or monogram using your initials or name.
Class Critique
week 4: essence of the figure
Project: working from two live models the class will investigate different ways of
interpreting the figure. Focus on essence, movement, gender and simplification of form.

week 5: 3D package design
Project: design a simple box to hold an object. part of the object must

week 6: music and art
     Project: interpret the music while listening to 2 half hour playlists in the studio.
